When Is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Kilimanjaro is an adventure that requires preparation, determination – and, of course, a little help from the weather gods. But when is actually the best time to climb Africa’s highest mountain?

The short answer is: it depends on what you’re looking for.

Do you want the most stable weather possible? Fewer people on the trails? Or perhaps the dramatic, lush scenery that comes with the rainy season?

Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout much of the year, but the different seasons can have a big impact on the weather, trail conditions, views and number of trekkers you encounter along the way.

The Dry Seasons – The Reliable Choice

The two main dry seasons are generally considered the most popular times to climb Kilimanjaro:

June–October and January–early March.

During these months, the chances of dry weather, clearer skies and good visibility are generally higher. The trails are often easier to navigate, and conditions on the mountain tend to be more predictable.

That makes the dry seasons a particularly good choice if it’s your first Kilimanjaro climb and you want the best possible chance of favourable conditions.

The trade-off? These are also the busiest periods on the mountain. If you prefer a quieter experience, it can be worth looking at the periods just before or after the peak season.

The Shoulder Seasons – A Little More Peace and Quiet

The shoulder seasons can be a great alternative.

Early March, June, October and early December can offer an interesting balance between weather and fewer trekkers.

There may be less traffic on the trails and a more peaceful, personal feeling throughout the climb. You can still experience favourable conditions, while avoiding some of the larger crowds of the busiest months.

For many trekkers, these periods are an underrated time to experience Kilimanjaro.

The Rainy Season – Lush, Dramatic and More Challenging

The main rainy periods are April–May and November.

This doesn’t mean Kilimanjaro is off limits. However, trekking conditions can be more challenging. Trails may be wetter and muddier, and the weather can be less predictable.

But there is another side to the rainy season.

The mountain becomes beautifully green and lush, the landscapes can feel even more dramatic, and there are far fewer people on the trails.

For experienced trekkers who value solitude, wild scenery and a greater sense of adventure, this can be a very rewarding time to climb.

So, When Is the Best Time?

There really isn't one single perfect month to climb Kilimanjaro.

It depends on the kind of experience you want.

For drier and more predictable conditions:June–October or January–early March.

For fewer people and a quieter experience:The shoulder seasons, particularly June or October.

For lush scenery and greater solitude:The rainy seasons of April–May and November – provided you’re prepared for more challenging conditions.

And whenever you choose to go, one thing matters more than finding the "perfect" month: giving your body enough time to acclimatise and choosing a route and itinerary that suits you.

Because climbing Kilimanjaro isn't only about reaching the summit.

It’s about the journey along the way – from the first steps through the rainforest to those final kilometres towards Uhuru Peak.
