The Story of Mpingo Adventures

Mpingo Adventures is a Tanzanian safari company built on perseverance, passion, and a belief in sustainable tourism, and above all, it's the lifelong dream of its founder, Joseph.

Joseph grew up in Moshi, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, where life came with its fair share of challenges. Thanks to the dedication of his mother, who saved for years to support his education, Joseph was able to attend the respected Tourism School in Arusha. After graduating in 2014, he spent several years working as a freelance guide for various safari companies, earning excellent recommendations and building a strong reputation in the field.

In 2020, Joseph took a leap of faith and launched his own company, Mpingo Adventures. The goal was to offer authentic, locally-led safari experiences with a strong focus on community and conservation. But just as things were getting started, the global pandemic brought the tourism industry to a sudden standstill.

In 2025, Joseph guided a safari for a visiting Swedish family. Among the group was Helen, an experienced entrepreneur with a background in e-commerce and a long-standing interest in social impact and development. Impressed by Joseph’s professionalism, vision, and dedication, Helen saw the potential to support a meaningful business that just needed the right foundation to grow.

After many conversations and careful planning, Helen joined as a partner to help relaunch and develop Mpingo Adventures, contributing with business strategy, digital expertise, and international perspective. Their collaboration is built on a shared commitment to responsible tourism and creating opportunities for local communities.

Today, Mpingo Adventures offers personalized safaris and cultural experiences across Tanzania, with a focus on authenticity, ethical travel, and unforgettable journeys led by locals who truly know the land.

Why "Mpingo"?

The name Mpingo comes from the Swahili word for the African Blackwood tree (Dalbergia melanoxylon), one of the hardest and most valuable woods in the world. Native to East Africa, Mpingo is known not only for its deep, rich color and durability but also for its cultural and ecological significance.

Historically, Mpingo wood has been used to craft fine musical instruments, intricate carvings, and tools — a material prized for both its beauty and strength. It takes decades for the Mpingo tree to mature, making it a symbol of resilience, patience, and lasting value.

At Mpingo Adventures, the name reflects our core values. Just like the tree, our company is rooted in strong local knowledge, cultural richness, and a long-term vision. We believe in building something sustainable — not only for our travelers, but for the communities and environments we work within.

Mpingo is more than a name. It’s a reminder of the strength that grows slowly, the beauty that comes from depth, and the power of staying true to your roots.
